We at Kamcare dream of healthy communities in which individuals can grow. We are committed to assisting communities to develop to their full potential and get them involved in actively changing their own lives. Kamcare’s office is situated in a semi-rural area with lots of small holdings and a number of informal settlements that are swamped with people. Our client base is extremely poor. Infrastructure in the informal settlements are the bare minimum required for healthy living, there are little opportunities for children, and unemployment, illiteracy and poverty is very high. In these circumstances Kamcare Community Development Center has a hands-on approach in addressing practical needs.
Volunteers from our community are providing needy children from Die Poort Primary school with lunchboxes every Tuesday.
With this project, Kamcare is taking hands with Farmer’s Kids. The main aim of this project is to teach people how to do vegetable farming on a small scale to firstly provide fresh vegetables to their own families (decreasing poverty) and to also sell the vegetables to get an income for the family. This training is combined with entrepreneurial training.
Blankets, food and clothes are donated to needy families when they have a crisis. It is important for us to include these families in the other Kamcare services like the vegetable garden training and other training courses.
we have many poor people whom we assist with clothes, especially during the winter months. Once a year we also have a jumble sale where we sell any excess from the previous year. The jumble sale is a way for us to both raise funds and assist the community economically. Community members are invited to buy items for next to nothing. Some of these items they buy for personal use and others they buy to sell in there community for a profit. any clothes are welcome new or second hand, blankets, shoes, bedding etc.
Children in the informal settlements have a lot of challenges when their parents have to work. Holidays can be very long and sometimes very alone. Kamcare is running a holiday programme once a year during the winter school holiday. The name of the programme is Kids Games. A relevant life theme is chosen and the Bible is incorporated by linking the theme with various relevant Bible characters or stories. The program takes the form of a mini Olympics with lots of music, sport and fun.
